Russell Shaw is a brand designer and illustrator based in San Francisco who focuses on playfulness, thinking before making, and seeing things through from start to finish.
His clients include Porsche, Tesla, Target, Kid President, Coca-Cola, AMC’s Breaking Bad, HarperCollins, DesignArmy, The Village Voice, Neenah Paper, and more. Currently he is working as Senior Communication Designer at Slack.
In February 2015, Kid President’s Guide To Being Awesome made the New York Times Best-Seller List (Russell worked as the book's designer and illustrator). One of his projects received "Best In Class" for lettering design in PRINT Magazine's 2016 Typography & Lettering annual. In October 2015, he was one of seven young designers chosen to compete in Command X at AIGA’s 2015 national conference – a live, head-to-head design competition where the audience voted on each designer's work throughout the event – and finished as a finalist. In 2014, he illustrated Brilliant! – a children's book about adoption and hope – alongside the author, Matt Burgess. After nearly a decade of working independently as an art director and designer for brands in Atlanta, in addition to teaching Visual Design courses at General Assembly and leading sessions on branding at business retreats, he uprooted and moved to the Bay Area, where he currently works in-house at Slack in the company’s newly-minted brand and communication design studio.

“There are no dream jobs. There is work that is worth your time, and work that isn’t. You’ll never be sure which is which, so there are only two ways to do the work in front of you: the right way or not at all.”
